US Open Venues
One of the great features of the US Open is that it is one of the major golf championships that hits the road annually. For four days a year, US open combines the world’s best golfers with some of finest golf courses around the USA, allowing golf fans from all corners of the States to catch a glimpse of their golfing heroes.
Since it was first played at the Newport Country Club, Rhode Island, back in 1895 the US Open has covered hundreds of thousands of miles over the past century. In addition to this, millions of spectators have lined the fairways to witness a competition that has played host to some of the most memorable moments in the history of golf.
Each venue poses different challenges to the US Open players, many of whom say that the Open is the toughest of all four majors. Each major has a set of characteristics that differentiates it from the others and the main characteristics of courses selected to host the US Open feature long holes which incorporate large areas of open rough and hilly greens. Such features place the emphasis on players to be able to drive long distances accurately down narrow fairways, whilst being able to putt accurately on challenging greens.
