US Open Championship Qualifying 2012

US Open GolfThe total number of players allowed to play in the US Open Championship is 156. The competition is open to any professional golfer or any amateur player who has a handicap of less than 1.4. In order to qualify a player must be exempt or play in a qualifying tournament.

Players who are exempt from qualifying gain automatic entry in to the US Open. Exempt players account for approximately half of all US Open players with the other half having to qualify. Criteria allowing a player to be exempt from qualifying include winners of a previous US Open in the past 10 years or any other winner of one of the other three majors from the last five years. The top 30 players from the previous seasons US PGA tour and top 15 players from the European tour also gain exemption.

The remaining players in the field must qualify for the US Open through two qualifying tournaments. Local amateurs play at smaller qualifying tournaments around the USA before joining non exempted professional in a second final qualifying round played over 36 holes at venues in America, Europe and Asia.

There is no age limit to players wishing to enter the US Open, the youngest ever player was 15-year-old Tadd Fujikawa and the oldest was Sam Sneed aged 61. However, this year the youngest ever player record will be broken due to the late entry of 14-year-old Andy Zhang.
